Paul Gavarni was largely self-taught as an artist, having afoot his career as a laic servant. In 1829 he submitted a watercolor of the neighbourhood pub of Gavarnie in the Chain to the Salon.

It was accepted and mistakenly exhibited descend the name 'Gavarni'; consently, unwind decided to adopt the designation.
